Chanel The show featured a youthful take on Chanel classics, mixing and matching separates as well as cultural (and. From neon hoops and oodles of necklaces to chunky, chain belts, the visual effect of these modern interpretations was striking. Model Daphne Groeneveld walks during Chanel's 2023/24 Cruise runway show. A fitting complement to the collection’s colorful, sequined garments, jewelry was over-accessorized in a perfectly ‘80s way. With a primary palette of lilac, pink and yellow, models sported monochrome swimsuits, bright tweed suits, and knit sets adorned with interlocking C’s. As such, it seemed only fitting that Viard honor Lagerfeld’s love for bold, vibrant designs in this throwback collection. Inspired by his supermodel muses of the ‘90s, Karl Lagerfeld produced some of his most iconic (and highly sought-after) designs for Chanel during this time of retro glamor and spunk. Widely considered a “golden period” for Chanel, Viard made a bold risk by transporting her audience to Lagerfeld’s most prized era of creation. Staged in a replica of the Carrousel du Louvre–which hosted much of Paris Fashion Week during the ‘80s and ‘90s–a raised runway was surrounded by old-school show photographers and taken over by smiling, hair-flipping, strutting models. From the clothes and accessories to the staging and soundtrack, Viard channeled the spirit and energy of the supermodel era in each facet of her Chanel show. Mini Bags Reigned Supreme on the Chanel Spring 2023 Runway Romantic details make way for the new minis of SS23 20 By Kaitlin Serio For Spring 2023, Chanel explores the essence of allure, the freedom of a woman’s movement, and an expression of glamour through a modern lens. “I want to recapture that emotion.” And, she did just that. “I used to love the sound of flashbulbs going off at the shows in the ’80s,” Viard expressed in her notes. Inspired by the flash photography and elevated runways of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the Chanel Spring-Summer 2022 show at the temporary Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris was nostalgic, whimsical and romantic all at once. The collection seemed less showy and dramatic overall, but in the post-Karl era of Chanel, it’s not that far from what we’ve seen in past seasons. Bags echoed the same odes to femininity as the clothes, with embellishments appearing throughout like crystals, pearls, sequins, and tiny heart details. While minis continue to reign, so does patent on the Chanel runway, and a handful of silhouettes were shown dressed in the shiny, eye-catching leather. While many of the below bags lack functionality, they sure are cute and bound to sell, as, like the ready-to-wear, there are a fair amount of highly commercialized flap bags. Most bags shown were mini (and micro), which is an interesting transition given the year’s big push of the 22 Bag, which is an oversized leather carryall, but I digress. The clothes were wearable and commercial for the most part, and while the bags were flirty and fun, they were slightly less practical. Silhouettes are light and airy, conveying a certain softness that echoes the vision of Virginie Viard. The ready-to-wear was flowy and feminine, featuring symbolic nods to womanhood, like pearls, sequins, feathers, and bows.

All of this clearly was inspired by cinema as the film “Last Year in Marienbad” (1961) by Alain Resnais was shown alongside clips of Kristen Stewart wearing pieces from the new collection as a teaser to the runway show. For Spring 2023, Chanel explores the essence of allure, the freedom of a woman’s movement, and an expression of glamour through a modern lens.
